Let's separate out the men from the bandwagoners who have to gang up on someone for expressing life experiences in a way they shut their minds off to protect them from their American Idol TV reality -- things said to NONE directly, but which obviously hit home -- they know they're hacks but must pretend otherwise in cyberspace amongst themselves and demean any actual musician who has the life and artistic experiences they can only dream of.
Getting back, what seperates the men from the bandwagoners is this -- do any of them actually sit down and listen to records? Seriously listen. To absorb every note, every aspect to learn how and what to play? OK. Maybe a few then and there. But to whom? How many before he/she decided they're a musician, by God?
No. Most likely they just wanna be TV people. They want all the glitter, the adoration but without the actual work and dedication it takes to be a real, real, real professional musician which, by the way, is more than TV people. Usually they're behind the scenes people. They're in orchestras, film sets, sidemen with traveling in things from circus bands to carnival acts to suit and tie affairs at political galas to pit orchestras to sitting on one's ass in freezing temperatures as part of some NFL teams official band -- the stuff I did for years.
But listening is the key, isn't it? Jumping up and down will never result in proficiency on an instrument. Maybe an audition for American Idol, but that's about it. No. One has to shut one's strinkin' mouth, get others around him to do the same, and listen, listen, listen. The more one listens, the more one might find. This is a very Buddhist thing -- how does one know what to say if one not listen first?
So, tell me, all you bandwagoners, who have you been really listening to? Who else before that? What stands out? Who do you emulate most and why? Did that particular record piece satisfy your soul or leave you wanting? What emotional impact did you derive from a particular work, collectively or individually? What is any given artist's particular signature sound? Who are their influences? Can you tell? What's your record collection like? Have you listened to every single track on every single one? Or is your CD player like a remote control on the TV? Get bored ... click it off? I guarantee the latter. But surprize me, O "professional" bandwagoners. Let's see what you're made of in regards to your "library." Hopefullly it's way beyond Green Day and Eminem.
